He earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2012 from Drexel University with a concentration in neuropsychology. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in the Department of Neurology in 2014. Dr. Rider has diverse experience in the assessment and rehabilitation of cognitive functioning in a variety of disorders and diseases including traumatic and anoxic brain injury, stroke, learning disorders, ADHD, chronic pain, epilepsy, dementia, and sleep disorders. He is also a licensed and practicing psychotherapist and has served as an academic and community educator on many topics related to brain health and neuropsychology. He has also served as a forensic expert in psychology and neuropsychology on matters of traumatic brain injury, posttraumatic stress disorder, dissociative identity disorder, competency, and workplace discrimination.

He earned a Masters in Journalism from Temple University and worked for 7 years as an editor and writer covering medicine and epidemiological issues for various publications. This work kindled an interest in research, so he returned to school and earned his doctorate in Neuropsychology from Drexel University. After he completed an Internship in Neuropsychology at Vancouver Coastal Health in Vancouver, BC, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. At Johns Hopkins, he conducted research applying direct current stimulation to improve cognitive functioning in schizophrenia and autism. Since returning to the Philadelphia area, Dr. van Steenburgh has worked in medico-legal settings to provide neuropsychological evaluation for adults of all ages and neurological conditions. He was also previously a faculty member at the City University of New York, including in the Department of Psychology at John Jay College and in two APA-accredited PhD programs in clinical psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center specializing in forensic psychology and clinical neuropsychology.
